Epilepsy: Diagnosis & Treatment

Overview

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures, which may involve loss of consciousness, involuntary movements, behavioral changes, and sensory disturbances. These seizures result from abnormal excessive electrical activity in the brain’s neurons.

Diagnosis

A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to identify the cause and type of epilepsy. Diagnostic methods include:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – Detects structural brain abnormalities that may cause seizures.

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) – Records electrical activity in the brain to identify seizure patterns.

  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET-CT) – Assesses brain metabolism and detects areas of abnormal neuronal activity.

Treatment

Epilepsy treatment aims to control seizures and improve the patient's quality of life. Options include:

  • Medication Therapy – Anticonvulsant drugs are prescribed to prevent seizure activity.

  • Surgical Treatment – In cases where medication is ineffective, resection of the epileptogenic zone (the area of the brain triggering seizures) may be performed.

Cost of Diagnosis & Treatment:

  • 16,000,000 – 20,000,000 KRW (surgical treatment)
