Liver Transplantation: Diagnosis & Treatment
Overview
Liver transplantation is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased liver with a healthy donor liver or a portion of it. This procedure is performed when no other medical or surgical treatments can effectively restore liver function.
Indications for Liver Transplantation
A liver transplant is recommended for patients with:
End-stage liver disease – When all other treatment options have been exhausted.
Life expectancy of less than one year without a transplant.
Acute liver failure – A rapid decline in liver function due to infection, toxins, or autoimmune disease.
Types of Liver Transplantation
Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation (DDLT) – The entire liver from a deceased donor is transplanted into the recipient.
Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) – A portion of the donor’s liver (usually the right lobe) is transplanted, allowing both the donor and recipient to regenerate liver function.
